Not much gets thrown away from the Jensen household these days! Our waste consciousness and minimization have evolved and developed into a way of life over the last 10 years. I have the philosophy that ‘waste’ can be made valuable again or avoided altogether through consumer choice.

I am an artist-designer from New Zealand who works under the name of ‘wastemedia’ to create contemporary sculpture and functional design pieces from discarded materials including plastic, wood, and metal. My background is in education and visual arts and I’ve lived and worked in Australia, the UK, and Aotearoa, New Zealand.

My process begins with the materials at hand, which, often inspire the piece. I am also influenced by traditional handicrafts and employ low-tech methods related to these in order to join and form plastics, and other materials. My forms are determined by the properties of the material, how it may be constructed, and the spirit of the piece. I try to use waste materials innovatively in order to create sophisticated works that belie their lowly origins. Often my projects help to divert materials from landfills, clean up the environment (a little) and educate others about issues relating to waste and consumerism.
