Blue McRight

Blue McRight is a visual artist, scuba diver, and environmentalist whose “mind is in the gutter”: constantly on the lookout for discards that she describes as “fallen urban fruit from the filthy orchard of our consumer culture”.

Underwater ecosystems with which McRight is intimately acquainted are embodied in her choice of subject and materials. Her knotted and woven sculptures and installations utilize found plastic trash such as straws, nets, rope, and elastic hair ties, frequently in conjunction with former instruments of death, including salvaged fishing nets, parts of traps, and bait baskets.

McRight’s current series, Plastinauts, is inspired by the many times she has driven between Los Angeles, where she lived and worked for 39 years, and New Mexico, her current home. Crisscrossing the ancient seabed, arid and strewn with plastic trash, she envisioned a future species inhabiting this “Invisible Sea”: marine-like creatures whose organic bodies have evolved to the point of becoming completely made of plastic.

McRight’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, the New Mexico Fine Arts Museum, and the DelArt Museum. Grants awarded include the City of Los Angeles Master Artist Fellowship, the Los Angeles Downtown Cultural Trust Grant, and a Cultural Grant for Artist in Residence, Los Angeles. Her many public commissions include artwork at the State Capitol, Sacramento, California; Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles; and the State Capitol in Olympia, Washington.

Blue McRight is represented by Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica, California.
