Anna Mein

Born in Kenya, Anna Mein attended Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and received a Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She worked for over a decade as an Art Director in Advertising and Architecture in London and Dallas, and now resides in California. Years of cross-disciplinary creative practice have led to her current body of work, which is a conversation in form and materiality that questions the societal context of creative output. In addition to lecturing and showing work, she provides creative counsel to numerous non-profit organizations.

Mein’s Wood and Waste series continues her exploration of the premise, the medium is the message. Addressing the discord of art conceptually devoted to a harmonic relationship with nature and environment but materially realized in a context indistinguishable from the agents of disruption, she seeks alternative materiality to synthesize conceptual and technical execution. Her wall sculptures are comprised of the compatible joinery of sticks, found detritus, and disposable straws. Not using adhesive, the slow pursuit of serendipitous connection between the natural and human-made substrates offers an unlikely marriage that can be both incongruous and complementary. The modular nature of this work means the sculptures can be disassembled and reassembled in new compositions, and ultimately disposed of responsibly.

British and American. Based in California.
