Rox de luca

Rox De Luca is an artist based in Bondi Beach, New South Wales, Australia, working on unceded Gadigal land. De Luca received a Bachelor of Arts (Visual) from Canberra School of Art, (1985) and a Graduate Diploma in Arts Administration from the University of NSW (1988). De Luca has exhibited regularly in solo and group exhibitions for over three decades. For many years the artist painted on discarded materials as a base, using aluminum offset printing plates or pre-loved book-covers from bookbinders. In 2010 the artist instinctively began collecting colorful plastic shards on nearby beaches whilst her young son was enjoying the surf.  What began as a quiet pastime has developed into a passionate material-based expression of caring.

“My art practice focuses on concepts of consumption and waste. The bundles and sculptural installations I make derive from the plastic detritus I collect from my local Bondi Beach and nearby Rose Bay.

The process of collecting begins with gleaning, often solo, and sometimes with local volunteer clean-up groups, along nearby coastlines. This gleaning is followed by the cleaning and sorting of the plastics by color and size which is fastidious, as is the jewelry-like threading of the components onto wire threads that follows. When completed, these works stand in stark contrast to the ease of disposability associated with the materials that arrive on our shorelines or accumulate as landfill, evidence of our collective human neglect and destruction of the environment that sustains us”.
