michelle stitzlein
For 15 years, Michelle visited elementary schools across the country to help bring awareness to pressing environmental concerns regarding the waste stream. She collaborated with students to create murals and sculptures inspired by nature and utilizing thousands of plastic bottle caps collected by the students. The visual impact of boxes full of overflowing bottle caps, saved in a short period of time, demonstrated the immense volume of plastic accumulated in each community and also the responsibility we all have in reducing, recycling and properly disposing of plastic.
Michelle’s latest works, created primarily with hundreds of used garden hoses and plastic coated electrical/computer wires, are inspired by organic forms found in nature and continue the dialogue of her environmental concerns about waste and consumerism. She maintains a studio in a repurposed grange hall in the community of Baltimore, Ohio, and her large scale sculptures and installations have traveled in solo exhibitions titled Industrial Nature to the Desert Botanical Garden, AZ; Saugatuck Center of the Arts, MI; Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, NY; Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, PA; Springfield Museum of Art, OH and the Franklin Park Conservatory, OH. Her work is represented in collections such as COSI – Center of Science & Industry, OH; Brukner Nature Center, OH; Erie Insurance, PA; and the Dayton Main Library, OH.
Michelle is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design, OH, and has been an artist-in-residence at Shenandoah National Park, VA, Denali National Park, AK, and the Millay Colony of Arts, NY. Additionally, she has been awarded two Individual Excellence Grants from the Ohio Arts Council as well as the Charley Harper Award from the Environmental Education Council of Ohio.
