Leticia Bajuyo

Music devices and recording media visually recur in Leticia Bajuyo's studio practice as metaphors for exploring fickle appetites. Of this media, donated CDs and DVDs have been a primary feature of her artwork since 2009. These discs are situated in a technological history of automated devices that read inscriptions and codes to reproduce experience. As desire shifts and value is re-allotted, what happens to the product left behind? By designing shiny vortices and layered mosaics, her CD/DVD artworks foster awareness of the thin line between desire and discard. She received an M.F.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a B.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame. Presently, Bajuyo lives, creates, and teaches in south Texas where she is a professor at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.

American. Based in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The Headphone Masterpiece, 2018
SCULPTURE

Artist: Leticia Bajuyo
Dimensions: 13" x 13" x 2"
Materials: Compact Disc and Digital Versatile Disc fragments, adhesive, and wood.

About: In fabrication, installation, de-installation, shipping, and so on for the large-scale artworks, discs fracture and break. Each broken disc shard could be a fragment of a song, a scene from a movie, a paragraph of an audio book, which no longer can spin in a disc drive to play to find out what is on it; however, the memory of memories is present. Bajuyo collects these broken fragments to create mosaics that give these disc fragments a final spot where each is part of a design that spirals and weaves within this ongoing series of collages.

Proceeds: 50% of net proceeds from the sale of this piece will go to South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center.

Price: $1,000 USD
(Price does not include shipping, tariffs or import fees or installation.)
